Featured Guest speaker: Dr. William Labov
Friday February 7th, 2014
Yinzling hosted a talk by Dr. William Labov, world-famous sociolinguist from the University of Pennsylvania. The talk, entitled “Pursuing the Pittsburgh Chain Shift” was held in the William Pitt Union Lower Lounge.
Dr. Labov is responsible for virtually founding the study of language variation with his pioneering studies of English spoken in Martha's Vineyard and New York City. Throughout his professorship, he has continually contributed to linguists' understanding of the complex interactions between linguistic variables and social interactions.
Dr. Labov's talk focused on Pittsburgh speech, and the various research that has been done on it, as well as ways of expanding this research further. By providing a talk from a widely known professor on Pittsburgh's own variety of English, we hoped that our talk allowed students to think more about both the discipline of linguistics, and the city where they live.
